Another week has flown by and we’re ready to start Block 3 in the Designer Duo Quilt-Along.
If I’m honest, I’ll share that this block had me reaching for my seam ripper more than once–not the block’s fault–more a function of me having too many directional prints to accommodate.
So, my first tip, take time to lay out your pieces & make sure everything is going in the direction you want then c-a-r-e-f-u-l-l-y pick them up & sew them together in sections, checking that everything is still lined up as your sew along.
This block features some familiar shapes including half square and quarter square triangle units. I used my Point Trimmer to nip the point-y ends off the triangles which made it much easier to line everything up.
Seeing the pieced squares become even bigger triangles is always fun.
(I think I’m spending too much time these days auditioning my pieces against all the different colors of OLFA mats just because I love how they look!)
Sewing these two flying geese units together with the pink positioned in different spots is going to create an interesting woven-type effect.
And check this out–see all the directional prints–I had a couple of these sewn “wrong” initially and not having the little pennants all hanging in the same direction was just not going to work for me. So, hello, seam ripper.
Finally, just in time, I produced a finished block:
This week, I’m giving away another prize pack to everyone that completes Block 3 and shares an image of it on either Instagram or Facebook using the hashtag #DesignerDuoQAL
Be sure to visit the other designers for their tips & tricks to make this block. Friends sewing along include the other part of the duo: Nancy Rink and then our other guest designers, Tiffany Hayes and Karen O’Connor.
